Car Security Tips:
  • Never leave your wallet or purse in an unoccupied vehicle (if you must, lock it in the glove compartment or conceal it in the trunk).
  • Install car alarms.
  • Always keep your car-doors locked - even if there is nothing inside to steal (they may take your car instead!).
  • Is a dog barking? Check out why.
  • Keep valuables out of sight (ipod, sunglasses, CD's, cell phones, briefcases, shopping bags).
Home Security Tips:
  • Close window blinds or shades when you are not at home (If a burglar can see that beautiful diamond necklace through the window, chances are they will try to get it; if they can't see it, they are not as tempted).
  • Install motion sensors on outdoor lights.
  • Lighting is hugely important. Leave porch and garage lights on at night. Also leave some interior lights on when you are not at home.
  • Keep windows and doors locked - even on the second level.
  • Lock up ladders, ropes or tools that could help a burglar gain entry (a ladder + an unlocked second-floor window = an open opportunity for burglary).
  • Clear brush and bushes away from windows so burglars won't have a place to hide.
  • Keep extra keys out of sight and in a safe place. Burglars usually know the typical hiding spots: under the doormat, under a flower pot, over the door, under a stone, etc.
  • Display only your last name on you nameplate or mailbox.
  • Team up with your neighbors to keep an eye out for "movers" or "repair people" at a house where no one is home; burglars disguise themselves as yard workers or movers.
  • Play the radio or TV while not at home.
  • Keep your garage door closed when you are not outside.
  • Call 911 for suspicious persons or behavior.
Vacation Time Means Extra Precautions:
  • Install a light controller that will turn on your interior lights at certain times.
  • Leave a car in your driveway or ask a neighbor to park in it.
  • Ask a neighbor to put trash in your trash cans.
  • Ask a neighbor to pick up your mail and newspaper every day, or have it held at the post office and stop your newspaper. A large pile of mail and newspapers is a clear signal that you are away.
  • Give a trusted neighbor your contact information for while you are away.
  • Install dead bolt locks on all exterior doors.
